Who We Are

The North Bay and District Labour Council is a central labour body that combines the strength of hundreds of local unions representing 15,000 working people and their families. Its mandate is to organize and advocate on issues that are vital to working people throughout the region. We believe that unions are positive forces for democratic social change, and that by working together we can improve Canada for everyone.

We’re connected to the broader labour movement through the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC), an umbrella organization for dozens of affiliated Canadian and international unions, as well as provincial federations of labour and regional labour councils. The CLC brings together Canada’s national and international unions, the provincial and territorial federations of labour councils, and 130 district labour councils. It represents the interests of more than three million affiliated workers in every imaginable occupation from coast to coast. Such interests include decent wages, healthy and safe workplaces, fair labour laws, equality rights, dignity in retirement, a sustainable environment, and respect for basic human rights (in Canada and around the world).

Decisions made by local governments help shape the kind of cities we live in. Municipalities are responsible for a wide variety of services and programs, from public transit to social services and the water we drink. We are proud of the diverse makeup of our communities. We have spoken out time and time again on issues of equity and social justice. We have joined with many others to demand that our public services are kept in public hands.
